A continual challenge of dementia caregivers is to help provide meaningful activities that engage a person’s attention and connect with their interests. A mix of activities is recommended in order to meet the various needs for each individual and adaptation is necessary due to changing skills and abilities. Finding and encouraging meaningful activities throughout the day can also help manage sleep problems and excessive napping.

Each day there are many things that provide us with purpose and pleasure. For a person with dementia, the need for a good quality of life is not diminished. However, without some assistance from family and caregivers, their ability to achieve purpose and pleasure is much more difficult.
