The holidays can be particularly stressful for families of seniors suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. It may be difficult to look forward to the holidays when a beloved family member is not himself and displaying difficult or unusual behavior. Memories of better times may surface as reminders of what you’ve lost or what has changed. At a time when you believe you should be happy, you may instead find that stress, disappointment and sadness prevail.

Be prepared for extended family gatherings and a break in routine to be a difficult time for someone suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Many caregivers experience high levels of stress hosting extended family and friends and attempting to carry on traditions and hosting duties.
