  • If your loved one is vulnerable to phone scams, turn the ring off on the telephone.

  • If your loved one is answering the phone, be aware of who they are talking with—scammers target older adults with dementia.

  • Look for unusual activity.

  • Befriend your loved one’s neighbor and ask if they would be willing to help keep an eye out for suspicious activity and strangers.

  • Perform daily activity checks on account and be prepared to cancel or curtail credit cards if necessary.

  • If your family member has the habit of keeping rolls of cash, give them notes in small denominations.

  • Be aware of your loved one’s purchases and keep them visible.

  • Observe your loved one with visitors.

  • If your loved one tries to give away a valuable, it may be time to store in a locked box.

  • Sit down and discuss his charitable giving and develop a plan together.

  • Help protect your loved one’s dignity and self-esteem by including them in decisions that affect their life.

  • Make safety a priority.
