5 Tips on Handling Inappropriate Sexual Behavior

  1. Make sure that your loved one’s caregiver does nothing to tempt them. Sometimes the person with Alzheimer’s is misinterpreting cues.

  2. Come up with some firm responses to your loved one, such as, “Do not say that to me, please.” It’s important not to reinforce the behavior with attention.

  3. Is there a particular time or place it is happening? During dressing or bathing, for example? If so, help the caregiver think about how to do these tasks in a very matter-of-fact way.

  4. Switching to a female or male caregiver may make this problem disappear.

  5. If all else fails, ask a doctor about medications that may dampen your loved one’s sexual ardor. This should be a last resort, however. It does not always work, can have unwanted side effects, and physicians are often reluctant to try this.
