Socialization has many benefits. But for the person with dementia, it’s safer just to stay home. They could be nervous about forgetting a name or failing to recognize an important person in their life.

Social withdrawal also can be caused by a desire to avoid embarrassment and having his or her friends see him struggling. Most people know that dementia is not “going away,” so depression may set in.

By being patient and finding simple, joyful moments, you and your family will still able to connect with their loved one.
