Alzheimer's Family Caregiver Training Workshops

Professional caregiver trainers at Home Instead Senior Care franchise offices across the nation will lead workshops for family caregivers on four different topics related to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care.



Workshop Topics:

Note: Workshops can be taken in any order. For instance, you do not need to take one class to get the full meaning of another. Workshop content may vary by location.

Class 1:
Alzheimer’s Disease & Other Dementias

Gaining a better overall understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and knowing what to expect as the disease progresses, can help you and your loved ones better face the challenges that come with memory loss.

This workshop will help you:

  • Learn about the causes of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
  • Recognize the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
  • Discover how Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are diagnosed.
  • Understand more about the behaviors that can be caused by the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Class 2:
Capture Life’s Journey—Using Memories to Improve Alzheimer’s Care

Learn how to make the most of the memories that your loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias has retained.

This workshop will help you:

  • Discover how “Capturing Life’s Journey℠” can help you and others provide the best care for your loved one.
  • Learn techniques to encourage your loved one to share his or her stories and memories.
  • Become familiar with the format of the Life Journal and how to record information about your loved one’s past.
  • Find out how to use the Life Journal in partnership with professional caregivers.

Class 3:
Techniques to Handle Challenging Behaviors

One of the most difficult aspects of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias is safely and effectively managing the difficult behaviors symptomatic of the disease.

This workshop will help you:

  • Learn more about the challenging behaviors that may be displayed by those with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.
  • Discover techniques to help handle these behaviors.
  • Determine what techniques work best to manage different types of behaviors.

Class 4:
Activities to Encourage Engagement

Activities that maximize the abilities and independence for an individual with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias remain one of the best methods for managing the disease.

This workshop will help you:

  • Learn about the benefits of staying active for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia.
  • Learn about three types of activities – for mind, body, and soul.
  • Discover various techniques to encourage your loved one to engage in an activity.
  • Become familiar with activities that are suitable for late stage Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, to stimulate your loved one’s five senses.

Combo Class 1 & 2:
Alzheimer’s Disease & Other Dementias / Capturing Life’s Journey—Using Memories to Improve Alzheimer’s Care

This workshop will combine material from classes one and two.


Combo Class 3 & 4:
Techniques to Handle Challenging Behaviors / Activities to Encourage Engagement

This workshop will combine material from classes three and four.
