People with dementia often start doing things they would never have done in the past—but it really varies as to what those behavioral symptoms are. The best thing in these situations is to simply find a way to “work around” a behavior like this. Perhaps the trash can in the bathroom can be kept empty so that when this person does this, it can simply be emptied it back into the toilet. Because this person has dementia, it won’t do any good to correct him or her or to try to get this person to understand that he or she could put it in the toilet.
