If there is a safety issue or you think your loved one may have dementia, you need to follow up. The first step is to talk to this person’s doctor. If your loved one is willing, you should go with him or her to the doctor. If he or she will not go with you to the doctor, ask this person for permission to talk with his or her doctor to make sure your loved one is getting the right medical care and support. Just to be clear, you do not need this person’s permission to talk with the doctor. And the doctor does not need his or her permission to listen to you. You do, however, need this person’s permission for you and the doctor to have a two way conversation in which the doctor discloses your loved one’s personal health information. That’s because health information is protected under our data privacy laws.
