Look at the home through the eyes of a person with dementia. Identify possible areas of danger. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What objects could injure the person?

  • Is it easy to get outside or to other areas like the kitchen, garage, or basement?

Some tips:

  • Install locks out of sight—place deadbolts either high or low on exterior doors.

  • Keep an extra set of keys hidden near the door for easy access.

  • Remove locks in bathrooms or bedrooms so that your loved one can’t get locked inside.
